Asbestos Floor Tile Removal

Floor tiles, sheet flooring and bitumen adhesive can contain asbestos in older properties, but appearance and age cannot confirm it. Pro Asbestos Removal undertakes owner-led non-licensed and NNLW floor-material work within its confirmed scope across the service area.

Pro Asbestos Removal carries out non-licensed and notifiable non-licensed asbestos work only. If a job is classed as licensable, it must be handled by an HSE-licensed contractor.

Asbestos Floor Tiles: Identify the Material Before Disturbance

Older floor tiles, sheet flooring and bitumen adhesive can contain asbestos. A location, tile dimension or colour is not enough to identify the material. If planned renovation will lift, cut, grind or otherwise disturb suspect flooring, establish what material is present and the correct work category first.

Asbestos-Containing Floor Materials

Vinyl Asbestos Tiles (VAT)

Vinyl and thermoplastic tiles can contain asbestos, but tile size, colour and age are not proof of asbestos content. Representative sampling is used where confirmation is needed.

Thermoplastic Tiles

Thermoplastic tiles can be asbestos-containing or asbestos-free. Material confirmation and the planned task determine the work route rather than appearance alone.

Bitumen Adhesive

Black or dark-brown bitumen adhesive can contain asbestos, but colour alone cannot confirm it. Where the adhesive will be disturbed, use an appropriate sampling or survey route if its content is unknown.

Asbestos Sheet Flooring

Some older sheet-flooring products can contain asbestos in backing layers. Where planned work will disturb the backing, establish what material is present first.

How We Work

Survey & Sampling

Before removal, the material information must be adequate for the planned task. Where sampling is needed, the competent sampling provider, laboratory and turnaround are confirmed for the individual instruction.

Area Preparation & Containment

The work area is isolated using polythene sheeting to prevent fibre spread to adjacent rooms. Ventilation openings are sealed. Operatives wear appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and disposable coveralls throughout the works.

Controlled Tile Removal

Tiles are removed using wet methods: water is applied to suppress fibre release during cutting and lifting. Where possible, tiles are removed whole to minimise breakage. Cracked or friable tiles are treated with additional care. The bitumen adhesive is also removed or encapsulated as required.

Waste Packaging & Removal

Asbestos waste is packaged, labelled and transported through the applicable hazardous-waste route. The exact packaging, carrier and disposal arrangements are set for the individual job.

Documentation & Handover

On completion, customers receive the legally required paperwork applicable to the work and waste movement. Survey or laboratory records are separate where those services were used.

Common Questions

Do asbestos floor tiles need a licensed contractor to remove?

Suitable floor-tile and adhesive work can be non-licensed or notifiable non-licensed work. The material, its condition and the planned task determine the category. Competence, risk assessment, controls and the waste route still apply. Pro Asbestos Removal undertakes only work within its confirmed non-licensed/NNLW scope; licensable work requires an HSE-licensed contractor.

How do I know if my floor tiles contain asbestos?

Floor tiles and bitumen adhesive can contain asbestos, but age, size and colour are not reliable proof. Where confirmation is needed, representative sampling and laboratory analysis are used for the material in scope.

Can asbestos floor tiles be encapsulated rather than removed?

Management, encapsulation or removal may be appropriate depending on the confirmed material, condition and planned disturbance. Encapsulation leaves the asbestos in place and is not suitable for every floor. Establish the appropriate work category and management requirements before choosing treatment or new flooring.

What happens to the asbestos waste after removal?

Asbestos waste follows the applicable hazardous-waste route. Customers receive the legally required paperwork that applies to the work and waste movement; the exact document set depends on the job.

How long does asbestos floor tile removal take?

Duration depends on the area, material, condition, access and agreed work scope. The programme is confirmed for the individual project in the written quotation.

Does the bitumen adhesive also need to be removed?

Not automatically. Bitumen adhesive may or may not contain asbestos. If the adhesive will be disturbed and its content is unknown, establish what it is first. Treatment or removal decisions depend on condition, task and the management needs for the property.
