What to Expect on Asbestos Removal Day: A Step-by-Step Guide

What to Expect
Before Removal Day: What to Prepare
The removal team arrives ready to work. The more prepared the site is, the more efficiently the day runs. The key preparation steps are straightforward, but they make a significant difference to the speed and safety of the work.
Follow the access and preparation instructions in the written quotation; do not disturb suspect material to prepare it
Keep children, pets and other occupants away from the agreed work area where the job-specific risk assessment requires it
Confirm vehicle, parking and access arrangements needed for the agreed job
Have any relevant survey, sampling or laboratory report available if it forms part of the job evidence
Tell us about shared access, neighbours or occupancy constraints that affect the agreed work area
Check the written scope, exclusions and current appointment timing before the visit
The Removal Day: Stage by Stage
Times are indicative for a typical residential removal (e.g. asbestos garage). Commercial and larger projects follow the same sequence but over a longer period.
1
Before the Appointment
Confirm the Written Scope
- Check the written quotation and agreed work area before the appointment
- Keep children, pets and other occupants away from the agreed work area where the job-specific risk assessment requires it
- Make sure access and parking arrangements needed for the job have been confirmed
- Have any relevant asbestos survey, sampling or laboratory report available if one forms part of the job evidence
- Do not disturb suspect material in an attempt to prepare the area for the contractor
2
Arrival
Scope and Work-Category Check
- The agreed material, work area and access conditions are checked against the written quotation
- For work within Pro Asbestos Removal's direct scope, the job-specific risk assessment and plan of work are reviewed before removal begins
- If the material or condition differs materially from the agreed scope, work can pause while the correct survey, sampling or contractor route is established
- Pro Asbestos Removal directly undertakes only non-licensed and NNLW work; licensable work requires an HSE-licensed contractor
3
Site Setup
Controls Appropriate to the Task
- The work area is segregated to the extent required by the assessed task
- Task-specific controls, PPE/RPE and waste arrangements are used for the direct non-licensed or NNLW work
- External roof, garage or outbuilding work also has separate work-at-height and access controls where applicable
- Licensed enclosure, decontamination-unit and analyst requirements belong to the HSE-licensed-contractor project where that route applies
4
Removal Work
Carry Out the Agreed Direct Work
- Only the asbestos work described in the agreed direct scope is carried out
- Handling methods are selected for the actual material, condition and task to minimise unnecessary breakage or fibre release
- Asbestos waste is packaged and controlled for the applicable hazardous-waste route
- Unexpected materials or scope changes are not silently absorbed into the job; they are assessed before further work
5
Handover
Check the Work Area and Applicable Records
- The direct work area is checked against the agreed completion scope before handover
- Four-stage clearance and a Certificate for Reoccupation are not universal asbestos-work requirements; they apply only where the relevant licensed-work process requires them
- Any external analyst, laboratory or HSE-licensed-contractor records remain the responsibility of those providers
6
Waste Movement
Job-Appropriate Waste Paperwork
- Asbestos waste follows the applicable hazardous-waste route agreed for the job
- Where a hazardous-waste consignment note is legally required for the waste movement, it forms part of the job records
- Customers receive the legally required paperwork applicable to the direct work and asbestos-waste movement
- Document timing and any external-provider records are confirmed for the individual job rather than promised as a universal same-day bundle
What Is the Enclosure and Why Is It Used?
An enclosure and negative-pressure system can form part of specified licensed asbestos work. That is an HSE-licensed-contractor process, not a universal setup for every asbestos job and not a direct licensable service from Pro Asbestos Removal. The licensed contractor determines the controls required for the actual material, task and work area.
For direct non-licensed or NNLW work, the controls are task-specific and can differ substantially from a licensed enclosure project. Do not use this guide as a method statement: the job-specific risk assessment and plan of work govern the direct task, while licensed work uses the HSE-licensed contractor's documented method and, where applicable, independent analyst handback.
Workplace Exposure Limit: The WEL for asbestos is 0.1 fibres per cubic centimetre of air (f/cm³), averaged over a four-hour period (CAR 2012 Regulation 11). The enclosure and wet methods are the primary controls that keep fibre concentrations well below this limit during removal. The independent air monitoring during the work confirms that the controls are effective.

Common Questions
Do I need to leave my home during asbestos removal?
That depends on the material, location, work method and job-specific risk assessment. The written scope should state any access restrictions before direct non-licensed or NNLW work begins. If the work is licensable, it must be planned and carried out by an HSE-licensed contractor using the controls required for that project.
How long does asbestos removal take?
Duration depends on the material, quantity, access, work category, waste route and agreed scope. The written quotation confirms the programme for the individual job. This guide does not promise a universal four-hour, one-day or same-week completion time.
When is four-stage clearance required?
Four-stage clearance and the Certificate for Reoccupation apply to specified licensed asbestos enclosure work. They are not universal requirements for every non-licensed or NNLW job. Where independent analyst clearance is required, the HSE-licensed contractor's project uses the appropriate analytical provider and handback process.
Can I watch the removal work?
Do not enter or interfere with a controlled asbestos work area. The access restriction depends on the job-specific risk assessment and work category. For licensable work, follow the HSE-licensed contractor's site controls; for our direct non-licensed/NNLW work, the agreed work-area restrictions are explained before the job starts.
What paperwork will I receive at the end of the job?
Customers receive the legally required paperwork applicable to the direct work and asbestos-waste movement. The exact document set depends on the work category and waste route. Survey, laboratory, analyst or HSE-licensed-contractor records remain separate where those providers are involved, and a clearance certificate is not issued for every asbestos job.

Discuss Your Requirements
Scope, provider requirements, price and availability are confirmed for the individual enquiry. Licensable work requires an HSE-licensed contractor.
